Through the Lens of Ani Collier: C is for Carmen
C is for Carmen.
Alberto Alonso choreographed Carmen for Maya Plisetskaya in 1967. Rodion Shchedrin, the world-renowned composer and Maya's husband, took on the famous opera by Georges Bizet and wrote Carmen Suite, which premiered at The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow fifty years ago.
Many dance companies around the world still perform Carmen today, and I am thrilled to have known Alberto and his wife, Sonia Calero. Like Alberto used to say, "it is a full circle," as Fate was one of the first solo roles that I danced with Ballet Arabesque in Bulgaria in the late 1980s.
Here are a few images of Carmen as performed by the Bulgarian Ballet:
Happy New Year!
